MALONE JUMPS AT OPPORTUNITY
CORNWALL. PEI, May 22, 2009 - "The opportunity came up and I jumped at it", Jason Malone said after being announced as the new head coach of the Prince Edward Island major midget champion Cornwall Superior Thunder of the NB-PEI Major Midget Hockey League on Friday.

"It is a chance to build your own team", he explained. "There are only four definite returnees. I am going in with an open mind. It should be a free-for-all. I’m looking forward to it."

A product of the North River Minor Hockey System, he comes to the position with a broad hockey background although he is still in his twenties. He became one of the premier defencemen on PEI. He played four years with the Summerside Western Capitals in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League from 2001 to 2005 and then served as an assistant coach with the Capitals for a year, followed by a year with the PEI Rocket.

In 2008-09 Jason got the itch to play again and decided to join the UPEI Panthers playing in the highly competitive Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey conference.

This will be Malone's first coaching opportunity with minor hockey.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge as well as getting back into coaching, the experienced I received as an assistant with both Summerside and the Rockets should prove invaluable", he said.

Working with him as Assistant Coach will be Johnathan Doiron while Tim Macphee will serve as goaltending coach. A fourth member of the coaching staff will be added shortly.

Doiron is Business Manager with Andrews Growth Programs and is also sales manager for Phantomwear Clothing and Apparell. He played his minor hockey in the Rustico Minor Hockey Syetem before moving on to play with the Kensignton Junior B Vipers.

Macphee is a graduate of the Thunder program before moving on to play with the Summerside Western Junior A Capitals. Tim is currently the goalie instructor at Andrews Hockey School.

The team is planning on holding a fitness testing session, in June, for any players interested in trying out for the Thunder this fall should attend. Details will be released shortly. If interested in attending out contact Robert MacKinnon by email at robmackinnon@eastlink.ca

Kris MacPhee will still be involved with the team, as he will be in charge of the team’s enhanced conditioning and off ice fitness program this season.
