CORNWALL, PEI, July 20, 2007 - Former junior star and university and professional hockey player Kris MacPhee has been named the new head coach of the Cornwall "Superior" Thunder Major Midget Hockey Team, Wade Crozier, president of the NB-PEI Major Midget Hockey League team announced Friday.
MacPhee, 27, a Prince Edward Island native, played his minor hockey with the North River Minor Hockey Association and has now come full circle being named as the head coach of the Cornwall major midget team.
In 1997-98, MacPhee joined the Summerside Capitals where he was named league rookie of the year. In 1998-99 he played for the Peterborough Petes of the OHL and in 1999-00 joined the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL before coming home to play for the Summerside Capitals in 2000-01, when he set a club record of 53 goals and 106 points. He was named Maritime Junior A Player of the Year and was the league’s top scorer.
He then attended the University of Prince Edward Island for four years; playing hockey for the Panthers in the AUS men’s hockey conference, and graduating in 2005 with a Masters of Arts degree.
After university, he played professional hockey for two years playing for two East Coast Hockey League teams, Dayton Bombers and Charlotte Checkers in 2005-06 and the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League, in 2006-07.
As guest speaker at the Summerside Capitals recent annual awards dinner MacPhee had this advice, which outlines his philosophy, for the players.
"I never really trained that hard and I did not practice as hard as I could some nights. I wish now, looking back, that I had given a little bit more. Make sure you put every effort into it (training) and believe me you will be rewarded for it."
If you are good enough to play at this level, you are good enough to play at the next. It is just a matter of making more of a commitment. The price of success is high, but so are the rewards."
He is currently doing fitness training for athletes getting ready for training camps and striving to get to the next level.
He will be naming his assistants in the near future.
